Frequently Asked Questions – Plumbing in Hervey Bay

Here are answers to some of the most common questions we get from Hervey Bay homeowners and businesses. If you cannot find what you are looking for, just give us a call we are happy to help.

General Questions

How do I know if I need a plumber?
If you have a blocked drain, leaking tap, no hot water, low water pressure, a running toilet, or any visible water damage, it is worth calling a plumber. Catching issues early almost always saves money in the long run. If you are unsure, call us and describe the issue – we can usually give you a good indication of what is involved before committing to a visit.
Are your plumbers licenced in Queensland?
Yes. All of our plumbers hold a current Queensland Plumbing and Drainage Licence as required under the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2018. We are also fully insured with public liability cover. You can ask to see our licence details at any time.
Do you provide written quotes?
Yes. We provide clear, written quotes before any work begins. For straightforward jobs we can usually quote over the phone. For larger or more complex work we may need to do a site assessment first. Either way, you will know the cost upfront.
What areas do you service?
We are based in Hervey Bay and service the surrounding Fraser Coast region including Pialba, Scarness, Torquay, Urangan, Eli Waters, Point Vernon, Dundowran, Nikenbah, Maryborough, River Heads, Howard, and nearby areas. Call us to check if we cover your location.

Emergency Plumbing

What counts as a plumbing emergency?
A plumbing emergency is any situation where there is an active risk of water damage, structural damage, health hazard, or a complete loss of essential services. Common examples include burst pipes, overflowing sewage, gas leaks, and total hot water system failure. If you are not sure, err on the side of caution and call us.
What should I do while waiting for an emergency plumber?
Turn off the water at the main shutoff valve to limit further damage. If it is a gas issue, evacuate the property and do not use electrical switches. Move valuables away from the affected area if safe to do so. Keep the area as clear as possible so we can get straight to work when we arrive.
Do you charge extra for after-hours or weekend call-outs?
After-hours and weekend call-out rates may apply depending on the time and nature of the job. We will always be upfront about any applicable rates before dispatching. Call us and we will give you a clear answer based on your situation.

Hot Water Systems

How long should a hot water system last?
A well-maintained hot water system typically lasts 8 to 12 years, though this varies by type and usage. Solar and heat pump systems often have longer service lives. If your system is approaching 10 years or is requiring frequent repairs, it is worth considering a replacement.
What is the most energy-efficient hot water system?
Heat pump hot water systems are generally the most energy efficient option available for Australian homes, using significantly less electricity than standard electric systems. Solar hot water is also excellent if your roof has good sun exposure. We can walk you through the options and help you choose the right system for your home and energy goals.
My hot water runs out quickly - what could cause this?
This is usually caused by a system that is undersized for your household, a failing heating element (in electric systems), a faulty thermostat, or sediment buildup in the tank. Call us and we can diagnose the issue and recommend a repair or replacement.

Blocked Drains

Can I use drain cleaner from the supermarket?
Chemical drain cleaners can help with minor grease and hair blockages, but they are not effective on solid blockages, tree root intrusion, or structural issues. They can also damage older pipes over time. If the blockage keeps returning or does not clear with home remedies, it is time to call a professional.
How do I know if I have a sewer blockage?
Signs of a sewer blockage include multiple drains backing up at the same time, gurgling sounds from toilets when you use other fixtures, and sewage odours inside or outside the home. A sewer blockage is a serious plumbing emergency and needs to be dealt with promptly.

Gas Plumbing

Can I connect a gas appliance myself?
No. In Queensland, all gas fitting work must be carried out by a licenced gas fitter. This includes connecting gas cooktops, BBQs, hot water systems, and heaters. Attempting gas work yourself is not only illegal but potentially very dangerous. Call us and we will arrange a safe, compliant installation.
I can smell gas - what should I do?
Leave the property immediately. Do not use light switches, phones, or any electrical devices inside the property. Do not smoke or use any open flame. Once outside and at a safe distance, call the gas emergency line for your supplier and then call us. We respond to gas emergencies quickly across Hervey Bay.
